First cuff / X-base and multi-stitch

Beginner kandi cuff ideas

A cuff is the first piece of kandi that feels like a project. There are two beginner routes. The X-base cuff uses one continuous cord that crosses through center beads, making a row of X shapes; it is fast, forgiving, and stretchy. The multi-stitch panel is a flat grid of rows stitched through the row below; it is slower, but it is how you make pictures.

Both need a plan you can read while your hands are busy. That is what the row-by-row stringing plan on every cuff recipe is for: it tells you “3 lime, 1 black, 3 lime” instead of making you count squares on a picture. Print it, or keep it open on a phone propped against your bead box.

Start with a tile that has one color per row or a simple checkerboard. Once you have finished one cuff that lies flat, the mushroom and alien tiles are the same stitch with more colors per row.

Checker Cuff

A two-color checkerboard panel: the classic first multi-stitch.

Maker note: Odd rows start on green, even rows start on lime; if a row drifts, you skipped a bead.

  1. Measure the wrist, add ease, and read the Checker Cuff bead count from the plan; round up to a multiple of 4 so the tile repeats cleanly at the seam.
  2. String row 1 straight from the plan, close it into a loop, then build rows 2–5 bead by bead through the row below; this recipe’s rhythm: Odd rows start on green, even rows start on lime; if a row drifts, you skipped a bead.
  3. Try Checker Cuff on the wrist, check that the pattern lines up where the loop closes, then tie, pull-test, and tuck the knot inside a bead.

X-base first, multi-stitch second

An X-base cuff takes about an hour and teaches tension. A multi-stitch panel takes an evening and teaches rows. Do them in that order.

Round the bead count to the tile width

If your wrist needs 22 beads and the tile is 4 wide, string 24. A clean repeat at the seam matters more than a perfect fit; the elastic absorbs two beads.

Tension is the whole skill

Pull snug after every bead, not tight. Too tight and the panel curls; too loose and the rows gap. Check every row against the wrist.

Questions makers ask

What is the easiest kandi cuff for beginners?

The X-base cuff. One cord, one repeating motion, and it stretches over the hand without a clasp. The Lime X Cuff recipe below is the two-color version.

How many beads do I need for a kandi cuff?

For an X-base cuff on a 7 inch wrist with 9 mm beads, about 11 X units or 55 beads. For a 5-row multi-stitch panel, about 105. Enter your wrist in the generator for your own number.

Do I need a pattern editor to make a cuff?

No. Every cuff recipe here has a row-by-row plan you can read while stringing, and the pattern maker lets you color your own tile and get the same plan.
